Gweeks bearing gifts!

Gweek Silver Band recently entered their first contest for many years at the Truro contest and came away with runners up prize in the ungraded section.

They also picked up the prize as the best Cornish band, and a 3rd in the 4th section. Solo cornet Linda Lee also received the best instrumentalist award.
The band, based on the Helford river in Cornwall, was one of many bands struggling to stay afloat, but has gradually got itself back to full strength thanks largely to bandmaster Tony Richards.
Secretary Jane Rutter told 4BR: "Everyone looks forward to practise night and is enthusiastic about the future."

As an ex Porthleven Town Band player (and sometimes guest  player on Flora Day!) I still follow the fortunes of local bands in West Cornwall.   It’s great to see that Gweek Silver Band is riding high once again.  Congratulations to Tony and all the band.

Hi all,   Just thought I'd have a look at your site, being a past member.

I thought the band sounded the best I had heard them in a long time.   Keep it up!!

Carolaire, Sunday 21st June 2009

Thank you, to all of the band for your support and delightful playing this evening. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, as did the 'congregation', judging by the compliments we received from many of them.

Best wishes
To Gweek Silver Band

What a superb evening!

Many many thanks to you Tony for supporting and playing at the start of Mawgan Feast Week 2009. The band deserve all the praise they receive.

I am sure they not only play well, but enjoy it!.

See you all soon.

Concert at St Ives West Pier  27 September 2009

I was lucky enough to hear you on the West Pier on this gorgeous, sunny afternoon, whilst on holiday in St Ives. The ambition and accomplishment of the Band simply boggled me. It truly made my afternoon to be able to wander down from my self-catering eyrie to the Pier and listen at close quarters to such a wealth of wonderful tunes, beautifully arranged for a band such as yours, and so magnificently and enthusiastically executed. Thank you so much!

Great job last night in Mullion

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves

Hope we did well for St. Julias Hospice

Thanks to all

Tony

A happy new year to you all.  In the early 1940s I lived at Mellanoweth Farm with Tom and Beatrice Mitchell and at that time the band room was a little higher up the road, and I used to go and listen to them practice and one of the pieces they played was Bandology, do you still play this piece.?

Would you kindly pass on my regards to Billy Orchard, I knew him as a little boy when comeing to Gweek for holidays. I have many happy memories of times past when I lived there.   Hoping for a reply sometime.

Yours faithfully, Peter Dickman,

We were delighted to have the Band lead our Remembrance Service, and it was so good to hear you marching through the village. Please thank all those who turned out to take part.

Thank you so much for all the help you gave me with the planning for Friday's event and also to yourself and the band for helping to make a lovely evening. I have had a lot of positive feedback so I guess everyone enjoyed themselves!
