This year the weather was kind and the event took place in the Gala Field overlooking the river. The tide was in, the sun was shining and the sky was blue, perfect conditions for an evening of musical entertainment.

Our guests were Pendeen Silver Band under the baton of Simon Smith and Hayle Town Band led by Reuben Long. The three bands marched from the centre of the village to the field where they each gave a short concert, finally coming together to present a massed band concert. The items varied from marches to hymn tunes and from jazz to Cornish favourites. Solo items included Pendeen's Steve Garner giving a rendition of “My Love Is Like  A Red, Red Rose” and our own Linda Lee playing ”I’ve Got You Under My Skin”.

Pig Roast - Tuesday 27th July

A traditional spit roast over an open fire took place in Gweek Gala Field. Despite grey skies and a short shower a large crowd appeared and business at the various stalls and side-shows was brisk. The first slices of the pig were auctioned by the band's patron Leslie Collins before a long queue of hungry customers formed.

In addition to the spit roast, teas, coffees, cakes and other refreshments were available.

A very high quality of musical entertainment was provided by St. Keverne Band under the baton of Mr Gareth Churcher, and country sports such as children's races, sheaf pitching and tug of war took place throughout the evening.

Duck Race and Barbecue - Thursday 5th August

The Annual Duck Race and Barbecue eventually took place in the mighty surging torrent of the Gweek River on Thursday 5th August. Entries were much higher this year and a total of 14 races took place. Conditions were not as favourable for the contestants as in the past and many hopeful leaders found themselves hindered by barely submerged rocks! All in all, a very good end to the gala events.

Although disappointed that there was no knobbly knees contest, Simon takes charge of the “Play Your Cards Right” competition.

St. Keverne Band provided excellent background music throughout the evening.

Thomas saves another in the “Beat the Goalie” contest.

During the brief shower an attempt is made to get into the Guiness Book of Records for the most people in a horsebox.

The Ladies Tug of War contest in full swing.
